The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency will begin re-classifying hydrocodone combination products such as Vicodin as Schedule II drugs instead of Schedule III effective Oct 6, 2014. Dentists with a Schedule III DEA registration who wish to keep prescribing these products must amend their registration to include Schedule II prescriptive authority. Visit www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov and click the registration changes link. The DEA will permit hydrocodone combination products prescriptions issued before Oct 6 to be refilled until April 8, 2015, if the prescription authorizes refills.
