The ADA News (3/7, Soderlund) reports the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has extended the deadline for dentists to either enroll as a Medicare Part D “ordering/referring provider” or opt out of the program. (This has been known as the Medicare Opt In or Opt Out deadline.) The deadline was June 1, 2016, but is now February 1, 2017.

Despite the extension, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is encouraging “health care providers to submit their Medicare enrollment applications or opt-out affidavits to their Medicare administrative contractors before August 1.” According to The ADA News, this is the fourth time CMS has extended the registration deadline.

The ADA cautions dentists that taking some sort of action ahead of the deadline is required—the federal government will see your decision not to do anything as a sign you want to opt-out. The GDA has updated its “Medicare Opt In/Opt Out Decision Guide” for members and posted it at www.gadental.org. Use this free guide to determine if opting in or out is the best decision for your particular dental practice. Click here to access the guide.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has learned of some businesses receiving fraudulent emails from scammers posing as the Department of Labor. The email advises recipients to download a guide to avoid being fined. The email had the subject: “OSHA Regulations — Avoid being fined.” While the sender may appear to be OSHA, — mailer@osha.gov — it’s not an OSHA-generated email. OSHA advises business owners who have received a message fitting the description to delete the message immediately and not click on any links. OSHA has alerted the appropriate authorities to the activity. (From ADA.org)
