GDA Encourages Innovation

Georgia Dentist 3-D Prints Mask

In these challenging times, the Georgia Dental Association immediately assembled a COVID-19 Task Force, and among other issues, is strongly encouraging members to be innovative. In fact, Georgia Dental Association member, Dr. Mark Causey, in Cumming has created a video on how to 3-D print a mask that may help healthcare providers in areas where there is a shortage of masks. We are sharing the video as one possible “innovative” tool in the toolbox for dentists and other health care providers. We encourage our dentists to continue to innovate and help improve this idea. In addition, GDA has established an Innovation Task Force to be Chaired by Dr. Causey so you can forward ideas such as this one for review. GDA assisted Dr. Causey with disclosure and regulatory guidance and will do so for any dentist innovator.

Please be advised that this mask and homemade masks have not been subject to any clinical testing and are generally not approved by the CDC, NIOSH, FDA, ADA, or any other certifying agency as PPE or with any ability to protect against the transmission of COVID-19. However, CDC guidelines set forth the following during critical PPE shortages:

In settings where facemasks are not available, Health Care Providers (HCP) may use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.”

Please be advised that the GDA is not endorsing the use of this mask or any similar homemade masks as a substitute for PPE as set forth by current CDC guidelines.*
