Volunteer Dental/Nondental Health Professionals
Only volunteers who have had their Hepatitis B vaccination will be allowed in
areas of direct patient care.
Dentists: Volunteer in triage, local anesthesia, oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, and pediatrics.
Dental Assistants: Volunteer in oral surgery, restorative, endodontics,
prosthodontics, pediatrics, and sterilization.
Dental Equipment Maintenance Technicians: Ensure the optimal operation of
Dental Hygienists: Provide preventive treatments (i.e. prophylaxis, topical
fluoride, sealants) and full mouth debridements.
Dental Hygiene Students: Provide patients with oral health instruction.
Dental Lab Technicians: Prepare interim partial dentures and complete upper dentures on site.
Dental Triage: Screen the patients and prioritize 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th areas of greatest oral health need
EMTs/Paramedics: Be available onsite in case of a medical emergency.
Medical Triage: Review patient’s health history, measure blood pressure and blood glucose levels. This can be performed by Physicans, RNs, Nursing Sutdents, or Medical Students.
Pharmacists, Pharmacy Students, Pharmacy Techs: Dispense pre-medications, antibiotics and low-level pain medications as prescribed by
dentists and oral surgeons.
Sterilization: Work with Sterilization Lead in following guidelines for safe sterilization practices of all GMOM and personal dental instruments. Ideal position for dental hygienists and dental assistants.
X-ray Technicians: Provide patients with panoramic and Nomad (portable) x-ray
Clinic Set-Up and Clinic Tear Down: Help with setting up and taking down the dental clinic.
Entertainment: Provide entertainment to the patients waiting for their turn through the clinic. This would include musical, theater, cheerleaders, juggling or magic acts, etc.
General Volunteer: Flexible position; to be placed where they are needed most. Assist Department Heads as needed.
Office / Data Entry: Enter information from patient treatment forms and patient interview questionnaires into computer for record keeping. May be asked to perform other minor clerical duties as well as they pertain to the clinic operations.
Parking Assistance: Direct traffic to appropriate designated parking lots (patient or volunteer lot); monitor parking areas for general security purposes; direct patients and volunteers to appropriate area of church campus.
Patient Check-Out: Verify that patient chart is completed in its entirety. Interview patients to gather information about their pain status and the time frame of their most recent dental care, insurance status, other demographic factors, and their GMOM experience. Ask patients to complete comment cards. Pass out dental goodie bags to patients prior to them leaving the clinic.
Patient Education: Provide oral health education materials and instruction. Dental students and dental hygiene students are ideal for this position.
Patient Escorts / Runners: Escort patients to and from the various GMOM departments.
Patient Hospitality: May provide beverage service to patients waiting in line through the night and during clinic hours. Will also require some clean-up of patient areas.
Patient Registration: Greet patients and explain how the program works,
distribute paperwork, and direct patients to triage areas.
Post Op & Record Verification: Double check patient record has been completed following treatment in any clinic area. Provide and review written post op materials with all patients as appropriate; answer patient questions related to treatment received and follow up care. Ideal position for dental students.
Security / Crowd Control: Ensure orderliness of everyone at the event.
Translators: Assist patients by interpreting for them in all clinic departments.
Individuals who are fluent in Spanish and Russian are of particular need. Individuals who are proficient in American Sign Language may also be needed.
Volunteer Hospitality: Provide food and beverage service to volunteers in volunteer cafeteria, including breakfast and lunch services. May require some limited food preparation. Will also require some clean-up of cafeteria areas.
Volunteer Registration: Greet and check-in volunteers.
Waste Management: Empty waste and help with general clean-up.
