Description
Pain management and opioid prescribing continue to evolve, creating new considerations for dental professionals. This practical course reviews current approaches to postoperative pain management, including appropriate use of non-opioid and opioid analgesics, patient risk assessment, safe prescribing practices, and compliance with Georgia prescribing requirements. Participants will also explore strategies for patient education, proper opioid disposal practices, and effective use of the Georgia Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) to support safe, responsible prescribing.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify current recommendations for managing acute postoperative dental pain, including appropriate use of non-opioid and opioid analgesics.
- Determine when opioid therapy may be appropriate and select alternative pain-management strategies when opioids are not indicated.
- Evaluate patient-specific factors, and potential substance-use risks that may influence prescribing decisions.
- Describe the role of the Georgia Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) in supporting safe opioid prescribing and meeting state requirements.
- Educate patients on the safe use, and disposal of opioid medications to reduce diversion and misuse.
This course is designed to satisfy the Georgia Board of Dentistry's biennial continuing education requirement for opioids.

Lisa G. Marin, DMD, MD
Dr. Lisa G. Marin obtained her Associates in Dental Hygiene from Macon College and worked for the State of Georgia’s Behavior Health Department before going on to complete a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health at the University of Georgia and a Doctorate of Medicine in Dentistry from The Medical College of Georgia.
Following Dental School completed a GPR at Jackson Memorial Hospital and continued to the University of Rochester graduating from medical school and completing OMFS training. Served as Chief of Service for both The Genesee Hospital and Rochester General Hospital before leaving to enter private practice. When she retired private practice, 2018, she re-entered the work in 2019, joining the academic arena. She graduated with certificate degree in Forensic Odontology from the University of Tennessee School Medicine in 2021. Joined the faculty and staff at Augusta University June 1, 2023. Currently she is Chair of the Department of OMFS and Director of OMFS Pre-doctorate Education.
